Shallot prices tending to move north

The value of the tiny onion would stay distorted in the coming months as the Purattasi and Karthigai pattam crop have been afflicted by pests and ailments, say trade sources.

Incessant rains and conducive weather are stated to have brought on the infestation in the significant tracts of Perambalur, Thuraiyur, Kallakurichi in Tamil Nadu. All around nine,000 hectares of crop area is believed to have been afflicted.

The Farm Varsity here has recommended farmers to acquire up required preventive steps to help save the crop in the coming months.

As for every a survey executed by the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Enhancement Studies, TNAU, the farm-gate costs of good high-quality tiny onion would hover higher than ₹50/kg in the coming months.
